While I was in a sleeping state…” a collaborative performance of music, video and dance, will be presented tonight, Friday April 22, 8-11 PM, at TheaterLab on 137 West 14th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues. Admission is $15.

The music of Dirty Churches anchors "While I Was in a Sleeping State".

In “Sleeping”, Brooklyn-based sound artists Dirty Churches merge samples and electronics with conventional acoustic instruments, creating textured sonic environments.

New compositions by Robert Boston and Jesse Gelaznik will be featured with video and live visual manipulation by Rachel Blackwell.

Laureen Elizabeth, a dancer from the Martha Graham Ensemble, will incorporate original choreography and improvisation, oscillating between narrative and abstraction in a subliminal oceanic world.

More about the artists:

Robert C. Boston is a musician working with piano, composition and experimental sound, who believes that “no sound is innocent”. His current projects include the Robert Boston Trio, his jazz improvisation group. He also collaborates with the Martha Graham Dance Company and the Mark Morris Dance Group.

Jesse Gelaznik is a self-taught visual artist and musician that describes his life through images and sound. He is the founding member of Dirty Churches and has played guitar in Glenn Branca’s 100 guitar orchestra for his symphony “Hallucination City”. He lives and works in Brooklyn N.Y.

Rachel Blackwell is a visual artist working in video, collage, and installation. Her videos focus on universal human experience: birth, death, consciousness, fear, tapping into currents that are present in all art and spiritual cultures. Her work has been screened at international festivals, most recently at the Liverpool Biennial, U.K.

Laureen Elizabeth started her dance training in Paris when she joined the Institut Professionnel de Danse Jazz, and became a member of the Modern Dance Ensemble. She relocated to New York City to join the Martha Graham School, as a member of Graham II and also dances with Caliince Dance and the Edgar Cortes Dance Theater.

Presented by Sue Kim of SKiNY Productions, who offers influences from hospitality, design, art history & dance, and from her collaborations with Jean-Georges Vongerichten and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. For more details, please email: skim757@nyc.rr.com.
