View Single Page

Join SonicScoop editor Justin Colletti at Degraw Sound once again as he partners up with B&H Pro Audio to put some of the best affordable large diaphragm condensers through their paces.

Singer/Songwriter Wes Hutchinson helps provide side-by-side comparisons of the Audio-Technia AT4050 & AT4047, the Rode NT1000 and NTK and the Blue Bluebird.

After the shootout, Colletti sits down with the engineers of Degraw Sound for a little shop talk and gets their impressions of the mics. Enjoy the video, and check out Part 3, coming soon.

You really can’t go wrong with any of these mics. They’d all make good studio starters. My first mic was a Rode NT2 and it’s still one of my faves for vocals and especially for piano. However, because it has a lot of presence in the upper mids, you’d wind up carving some space out of your mix if you used it for everything. The newer Rodes are some of the best mid-priced mics around. While the sound of the 4050 is maybe the least “exciting” of these mics, there’s a reason it’s a professional studio workhorse: it’s a mic you could use on pretty much everything and have a good mix from the get-go. Excellent on guitar amps paired with a darker dynamic like a 421. My buddy makes exquisite records with just a Bluebird and a 57.
