Artist Amelia Robinson and her band, along with manager Karla Chee-a-tow, tracked at Daddy’s House, the NYC recording facility owned by Sean “Puffy” Combs, recently for Hip Hop Public Health. Studio veteran Tony Drootin sits on the Board of HHPH and was instrumental in providing studio time and bringing in long time associate Rick Slater to engineer the tracking date.

HHPH is producing an album featuring various artists to promote healthy lifestyles in children. The project is tied into both the Partnership for a Healthy America and the Let’s Move initiative. Proceeds from the record will help fund both initiatives.

The mission of HHPH is to reduce healthcare disparities through context-relevant, cost-effective, intergenerational educational interventions focused on disease prevention and health promotion. The tracking was done with Amelia’s band all playing live in the studio. No iso booths were used, so careful placement of the players was needed to minimize bleed. With the help of staff engineer Ben Kennedy seconding, the studio was set up and the song tracked with minimal overdubs in the course of an afternoon.

With the options to track live being more limited, it’s nice to see there are a few good sounding rooms that can still rise to the occasion.

Rick Slater is a NYC-based producer/engineer who’s recorded and/or mixed with Chuck D, Robben Ford and James Chance, and worked in NYC studios such as Mediasound, Quad and Sony. Learn more and get in touch at http://www.slatermix.com.
