The Gaslight Anthem, Favourite Sons, Natalie Merchant at The Magic Shop
NYC’s Magic Shop Studios — with its custom wrap-around Neve 80-series console, 1,000-sq-ft live room and new Class-A Neve 5088-equipped mixing suite — has been plenty busy with sessions for Natalie Merchant, The Gaslight Anthem, Favourite Sons and a host of other record projects.
Magic Shop owner Steve Rosenthal mixed Merchant’s latest album, Leave Your Sleep with engineer Eli Walker for Nonesuch Records.
The Gaslight Anthem tracked their new album, American Slang, over a few months at The Magic Shop, with producer Ted Hutt (Flogging Molly, Jesse Malin) and engineer Ryan Maul. American Slang is due out June 15 on SideOneDummy Records.
Brooklyn indie-rock band Favourite Sons recently mixed their upcoming album with engineer T.J. Doherty. And, Cobra Starship tracked and mixed for an iTunes exclusive release, with Ted Young engineering.
Earlier this year, the Magic Shop welcomed Blonde Redhead in to track their upcoming album with engineer Drew Brown. And Serena Jean tracked and mixed her album, Town and Country, with producer Jimi Zhivago and engineer Brian Thorn. Jessica Thompson mastered the album.
Zhivago also recently produced a record with NYC-based singer/songwriter Chris Riffle, with mixing by Thorn and Rosenthal, and mastering by Thompson.
And, comedian-performer Margaret Cho recently recorded at The Magic Shop with her band, the Cliks, and engineer Ted Young.
