NYC Winter Jazzfest Starts Tonight
The 2010 Winter Jazzfest kicks off tonight with showcases at (Le) Poisson Rouge, Kenny’s Castaways and Zinc Bar and continues through tomorrow night, where the festival will take over two more Bleeker Street-area venues, Sullivan Hall and Bitter End.
This sixth annual Winter Jazzfest coincides with the Arts Presenters (APAP) Conference, giving over 40 different jazz groups the opportunity to showcase in front of presenters, promoters, talent buyers, educators, musicians and avid fans.
Over 5,000 arts professionals will be in New York City for the annual APAP conference from January 8-12. As there will be hundreds of showcases scheduled throughout the weekend around the city both at the Hilton Hotel and in alternative venues, Winter Jazzfest offers APAP conference attendees, and the general public, the opportunity to experience the best of today’s new live jazz and experimental music in club venue settings.
The 2010 Winter Jazzfest will feature two showcases tonight (1/8), with guest curators Meghan Stabile of Revive Da Live and Adam Schatz of Search & Restore. Kenny’s Castaways will stage the Search & Restore showcase, featuring Briggan Krauss’ Trio Coordinate, Matt Wilson Quartet, Mark Guiliana‘s Beat Music, and Peter Apfelbaum and the New York Hieroglyphics (among others), while Zinc Bar will house the Revive Da Live showcase, featuring Soul Cycle, Ben Williams & Sound Effect, Chelsea Baratz Quartet, and Jaleel Shaw Quartet.
WBGO’s Josh Jackson, host of The Checkout, will present artists at Le Poisson Rouge, where tonight’s lineup includes Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, Jamie Leonhart, ELEW / Eric Lewis and Nicholas Payton SeXXXtet.
