AES NYC Convention Coming Up! Keynote Speaker, Panels Announced
The 127th AES (Audio Engineering Society) Convention will be held in NYC this year at the Jacob Javits Center, October 9-12. The AES show-floor is always a mind-blowing gear-fest and meeting ground for music and audio production/engineering talent. For registration info and a complete rundown of this year’s technical program, visit: http://www.aes.org/events/127/.
Today, the AES announced that this year’s Keynote Speaker is radio personality William “Bill” McGlaughlin. A Peabody Award-winner and longtime host and music director of American Public Media’s Saint Paul Sunday public radio program, McGlaughlin is a broadcaster, educator, composer and conductor. He also hosts Exploring Music, a WFMT daily radio program showcasing great works of classical music and exploring a single classical music theme in hour-long daily episodes.
Entitled Talent Doesn’t Push Buttons, McGlaughlin’s address will consider the relationship between the on-air talent and the audio engineers who insure the high-quality sound and technical support that contribute to a program’s long-term success.
This year’s technical program will feature tutorials, master classes, seminars, panel discussions and white paper sessions, developed to offer at least something for everyone. The scheduled master classes include “Platinum Mixing in the Box” by NYC-based engineer/producer Kevin Killen (Elvis Costello, Peter Gabriel, Tori Amos, U2) and “Wrangling The Room,” presented by acoustician and studio musician Bob Hodas.
Workshops on Film Scoring (from composition to recording to post-production), Mastering, User Interfaces for Audio and Interacting with Semantic Audio are on the schedule, along with several live sound seminars, covering miking techniques, measuring and aligning subwoofers, automixing and networking digital audio, among other topics.
Sessions on the production and business of Game Audio will also go down at the Javits, including workshops on 3D simulation techniques, implementing sound and music for games using the Unreal 3 Engine, interactive speech for games, and techniques of audio localization for games.
